Artist Bio Renee Biertempfel
Renee grew up in the countryside of Harmony Pa. Growing up in the country was wonderful for the imagination: "We were surrounded by woods filled with large old stones. This is where I started getting ideas to draw faeries and other magical images." A graduate of The Art Institute of Pittsburgh in Visual Communications, she continued (along-side to her "day job") to create and bring to life faeries and other fantasy art inspired by the images of Alan Lee and Brian Froud. She now lives Pennsylvania.
Dragon Myth
Dragons are awe-inspiring patchwork creatures found in the myths and legends of cultures all around the world. In Europe, they are nightmarish fire-spewing reptiles, large and lizard-like, with the forked tongue of a snake and wings like a bat. In the legends, they are reviled, and feared because they liked to imprison maidens, destroy villages and hoard over mountains of gold.
In the ancient cultures of Mexico and South America, a divine feathered serpent known by various names was, believed to renew the world after each cycle of destruction.
In China, dragons are amphibious creatures that dwell in oceans, lakes, rivers and even raindrops. They are revered; as life-giving symbols of fortune and fertility, capable of unleashing rain in times of drought. They are animal mosaics, possessing the body of a snake, the scales of a fish, the talons of an eagle, the antlers of a stag, and the face of a gilin—another mythical creature that resembles a deer but whose body; is wreathed in flames.
g Dragons are winged beings portrayed in the ancient mythologies of most cultures. They link with winged gods from the heavens who came to Earth to create the human race and are very important symbology in the creational blueprint of our reality.
Much of dragon lore tells us that dragons were loathsome beasts and evil enemies to humankind. However, dragons were born of a time other than men; a time of chaos; a time of creation out of destruction. The dragon is a fabulous and universal symbolic figure found in most cultures thought the world.
Some examples of the symbology of the dragon are:
- Gnostics; "The way through all things."
- Alchemy; "A winged dragon - the volatile elements; without wings - the fixed elements."
- Chinese; "The spirit of the way"' bringing eternal change.
- Guardian of the 'Flaming Pearl;" symbol of spiritual perfection and powerful amulet of luck.
